Next step for connected devices? Connect the devices

When it comes to the connected home market, the hot action won't be so much in the devices themselves, but in platforms that tie together different products.

Smart thermostat Nest is just one device that makes up the connected home.
(Credit: Nest)
Instead of calling a handyman to repair a busted refrigerator or thermostat, imagine instead calling the "maker man." In addition to being able to check the mechanics of a device on the fritz, this fix-it person could also check things like connectivity and signal strength for the Wi-Fi-enabled appliance.
That's what Alex Hawkinson, chief executive of SmartThings, envisions. His startup makes a family of Internet-connected devices for the home. SmartThings also runs a platform service that helps people remotely control all of the other disparate devices made by different companies that are beginning to make their way into people's homes -- things like "smart" locks, lights, thermostats, and electrical plugs.

A SmartThings electrical plug
(Credit: SmartThings) It's fun to postulate about the future, but not exactly very helpful to set the crystal ball too far into the distance. Hawkinson, though, thinks that the days of the maker man aren't all that far away, and that a version of that concept will be around by next year. (The reference to "makers" comes from the
maker movement that places a heavy emphasis on robotics and DIY culture.) When I ask Hawkinson how he's so sure, he coyly refers to work that his own company is doing, and won't elaborate further.

That's just one prediction for what's likely going to emerge from the nascent connected home market in the upcoming year. But it encapsulates the kind of thing that industry insiders expect to see in 2014: important improvements not in the products themselves, but in the services around products.

The thinking is that the big opportunity will be for platforms, or hubs, like SmartThings, vying to tie together the so-called Internet of Things (a press friendly name for the connected device category), said IDC analyst Jonathan Gaw. With consumers actually starting to pay attention to connected products, the need will come for an easy way to manage all of them, despite their different manufacturers and ecosystems, Gaw said.
To be clear, connected devices still have a long way to go before they become a mainstay, or even more than an occasional fixture, in American homes. According to the latest research out of Forrester, only 2 percent of households currently use connected lights, climate control, or energy management, while only 5 percent use a connected security system. And about 30 percent to 40 percent of households say they're interested in using these kinds of devices and services in the future, according to the report which came out this week. But, if only anecdotally, the market has been making progress in the last few years, with legacy companies like General Electric and Honeywell investing in connected products.

Other companies trying to tie together the home include Revolv, which CNET described as designed to be the "central nervous system for your smart home devices." The product is a hub that connects to your home's Wi-Fi and acts as a universal remote for all your devices, instead of having to control them through each product's individual app. The product works with devices like the Nest thermostat and Yale locks.

How to Explode Your Traffic and Branding with Blog Commenting

Blog commenting is something that many of us do, but would you consider it a strong point of your online marketing and branding? There are many different ways that blog commenting can work for building traffic to your site and building your brand in the process, but too many comments are looking for a quick link and using short cut methods that end up hurting their brand rather than helping it.

I run a decent amount of large blogs, which means I get to manage a lot of blog comments. This isn’t something I enjoy doing, as I get to deal with a lot of spam and waste time weeding out the good ones from the bad… however it has taught me a lot along the way. On one of my larger sites, BloggingTips.com, I created a set of blog commenting guidelines for my readers to follow. These rules are made up of the following:

All comments must have a “real name” associated with the comment
Your avatar picture should be of a real person and not blank/placeholder
Comments need to provide value and not be a simple “nice post” message.
By setting guidelines you can expect better quality from the people who are already commenting on your site, while also potentially eliminating the ones that are wasting your time and doing drive-by spam comments as well.
How to Explode Your Traffic and Branding with Blog Commenting

The Benefits of Blog Commenting
When it comes to commenting on other blogs, there are many reasons why you should be doing this. Getting backlinks to your site, gaining exposure through your name and gravatar image, and also providing quality content are just three of the major benefits.

As beneficial as blog commenting might be, it is rare that you will find many top bloggers commenting on smaller blog posts. This usually isn’t because they don’t care, but instead of other obligations that take up most of their time.

One way that I have been able to relate with bloggers of all sizes is to make sure I take the time to comment on any blogs that mention my name or sites, in addition to responding to any interview requests that come my way as well. Yes, this does take up a lot of time, but it’s something I’ve always said that I would appreciate and act on.

This is especially appreciated by any new bloggers who are on the up and coming. It’s a thrill to see a big name commenting on your new baby, and it will be remembered for a long time coming.

Important note: I would definitely look at blog commenting from more of a “branding” concept versus trying to get new links and traffic to your sites. But if you are going to be focusing on blog commenting for traffic and links, be sure to follow those same guidelines I mentioned above and also provide unique, thoughtful comments that people will find value in. This will increase the chances of readers noticing  your comment and possibly clicking over to your site.

How to Find Great Blogs to Comment On

The next part of the process to exploding your traffic and branding through blog commenting is finding the right blogs to comment on. Obviously you are going to want to comment on blogs that are in your same niche, since this is the type of traffic you are going to want to bring back to your site.

The Technorati 100 is a great place to start and you can search through their site for blogs over a wide range of topics. I also recommend you take a look at my company’s list Brand 150, which is  made up of over 500 different blogs and uses a unique algorithm that ranks sites based on their social following and various site rankings.

No matter what reason you are leaving comments on blogs for, make sure you end up improving your online reputation versus destroying it.

50 Things You Need To Know About Pinterest

Was there a site as dominating as Pinterest was in 2013? We don’t think so. Pinterest had a phenomenal year, and that’s putting it lightly. In fact, over the last couple of years, the image-bookmarking site has been one of the fastest growing sites ever. It’s increasing rate has even outpaced that of Facebook and Twitter.

While users have been getting a lot of inspiration from Pinterest, the site has also proven itself to be effective for business. In the world of e-commerce, Pinterest has been great at attracting viewers to your business and can help increase sales. How lucrative have those visual pinboards been? Well, the average e-commerce order placed by a Pinterest user is $179. Compare that to $80 for Facebook and $69 for Twitter, and you can easily notice that there’s money to be made.
If that fact wasn’t enough to convince you of the power of Pinterest, perhaps one of these 50 tidbits will change your opinion.
  1. It’s been estimated that 47% of online shoppers in the U.S. have made a purchase based on a recommendation via Pinterest.

Oracle To Launch Cloud IaaS In 2014

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison says his company intends to be price competitive with established cloud infrastructure-as-a-service players like Amazon, Microsoft and Rackspace.

While Oracle's cloud portfolio to date is focused on its own products, it's planning to roll out a cloud IaaS service in the first half of next year that's aimed at Amazon Web Services, IBM and other cloud providers.

"We intend to compete aggressively in the commodity infrastructure as a service marketplace," Ellison said during Oracle's second-quarter earnings call.

The Oracle empire was built on high-margin products, which is why this was a surprising comment. It's hard to imagine Oracle engaging in a price war in the cloud IaaS trenches with Amazon Web Services, which is constantly slashing pricing for its cloud services, and Microsoft, which has vowed match Amazon's price cuts with Windows Azure IaaS.

Turns out cloud IaaS is just a part of Oracle's cloud strategy. Oracle will also sell a "highly differentiated platform as a service" as well as a suite of enterprise SaaS apps, Ellison said during the call. Oracle's combination of cloud apps, platform and infrastructure is something its enterprise rivals can't match, according to Ellison.

"We are going to be cost competitive and price competitive at the infrastructure level while being highly differentiated at both the platform level and the application level," Ellison added.

One bright spot during Oracle's second quarter was cloud bookings, which grew 35 percent during the quarter compared to last year. Ellison said this success was partly attributable to Oracle setting up sales teams that focus specifically on Oracle's competitors.

The combination of Java and Oracle's 12c database, which is built specifically for the cloud, gives Oracle a stronger platform than any of its SaaS competitors, Ellison said.

Ellison also said Oracle has sales teams dedicated to competing with Workday in human resources software, Salesforce.com in customer service software and SAP in ERP software. "We are organized by functional area so we can compete effectively against this new generation of specialists."

Google Toolbar PageRank Lives On With The First Update In Over 10 Months

Google has updated the Toolbar PageRank values this morning, despite Google’s Matt Cutts implying the update would not happen again within 2013.
The SEO community, discussion forums and social media outlets are lighting up with the news that Google has actually updated the Toolbar PageRank values. Why?
(1) The SEO industry always lights up when the most visible indicator and easiest to see metric of Google linkage data changes.
(2) Because no one expected a Toolbar PageRank update this year.
The last Toolbar PageRank update was over 10 months ago and I predicted, wrongly, that Toolbar PageRank was dead. I was wrong, Google updated it today, 10+ months later and well before anyone thought there would be an update.
Google has implied over the years that toolbar PageRank would go away and has slowly dropped support for the feature in several browsers over the years. Although, Google did tell us Toolbar PageRank wouldn’t fully go away, at least not on older browsers that support it.
For more on the importance, or lack-there-of, Toolbar PageRank see our guide on PageRank.

How to Use Social Media as a Link-Building Tool

Social media can provide a great platform to spread brand awareness. Used properly, your social presence can also be used to boost your SEO strategy by earning quality backlinks to your website.
Links are one of the most important quantifiers used by search engines as they decide how relevant, important, and trusted you are. The more good quality links you have, the more ‘value’ is assigned to your site and the higher your ranking in the search engine results pages (SERPs).

Provide Content that Adds Value

There are many ways to get links but social media provides a good opportunity to earn links naturally. As search algorithms get more sophisticated, aggressive self-promotion and anything that even approaches the idea of link farming is becoming less effective and can even be harmful to your  rankings. If you create content that people find valuable, they are more likely to want to share it.
What people find valuable can vary but good quality infographics and posts that provide statistics, well-researched information, and new angles on a subject are all good starting points. A good video that captures viewers’ attention is eminently shareable, which is one reason nearly 87% of brand and agency marketers now create video for content marketing.
Original, entertaining posts stand a chance of going viral. But don’t just concentrate on entertainment value – a solid, useful post is likely to provide a long-term return, as people could use it as a reference for their own content. Experienced bloggers and content writers will often link back to your content rather than quote or steal it, especially if it appears authoritative.

Contribute to the Conversation

The quality of your posts and responses is more important than sheer frequency. People are still likely to link to your content if it is valuable, even if it is a one-off. By making frequent contributions however, you can build up your presence and authority in relevant fields. Not every response you make has to be a meticulously researched and densely packed data bomb. You can add useful snippets of info, offer your opinion or simply say, ‘Hey, great post’ every once in a while. Building your presence means that people in the community are already aware of you and may be even more likely to re-use your content when you do bring out the more valuable posts. If you keep an eye on the conversation and are able to respond positively to others’ queries and problems, this can also help.
It’s particularly useful to provide linkable content within the first few responses to a new blog or post. Being within the first five or ten posts – and certainly within the first page where applicable – can really help get your content noticed.

Identify Targets

The time and resources you have to spend on social media will be finite, so it pays to target your efforts effectively. You’ll ideally want to be seeking out key influencers in the relevant field. This may mean that your comments and posts are competing with a lot of others but this is where the value you build in can help them stand out.
Facebook and Twitter are the two go-to platforms for most people but you should also seek out targets on other sites such as YouTube, Pinterest, and Tumblr. If you are marketing within specific regions, you might want to extend your efforts to the most popular sites in each market. VK, for example, is the preferred social media site in Russia, while Orkut can help extend your reach within India and Brazil.

Use the Right Tools

There are a number of tools and services that can help you find the best targets. Followerwonk, for example, offers a Twitter analytics service. This can help you sort and compare followers by looking at data such as social authority scores and the percentage with URLs. You can also gauge reactions to your own tweets by monitoring your activity alongside current follower numbers.
Fresh Web Explorer is another handy tool as it searches for mentions of your brand, company or other keyword and matches this with ‘feed authority’. This can help you sort key influencers from those with less perceived authority, allowing you to target your efforts more effectively.
As links from social media tend to be earned rather than bought or traded, the results of any campaign can be difficult to predict. Genuine earned links can be very valuable – which makes all the effort worth it!

November 2013 Search Market Share Frozen, Overall Query Volume Down

It’s very cold in many parts of the US right now. And just like much of the country, the relative market share positions of the major search engines are essentially frozen. November search market share data from comScore reflects virtually no change from last month.
Google lost a fraction of a percent and Yahoo gained a miniscule tenth of a point, as did AOL. Bing and Ask.com were flat.
November search market share
ComScore says that overall search query volume in November was down across the board, by a surprising 6 percent. Ask was off by 7 percent and AOL by 3 percent. Otherwise the “big three” were all off by the same 6 percent. That’s curious going into the holiday shopping season.
